The length of 5.1 m and the wheelbase 3.1 m mean that the new Jaguar XFL is virtually the same size as the XJ. The new model will be produced and sold exclusively in China.
Chinese like long wheelbase cars and Jaguar decided to meet their wishes. The XFL would not make sense in any other market, as it is as long as the XJ. But Chinese habit is to offer longest possible legroom for the passengers in the rear, even in lower class models. Therefore BMW offers LWB variants of both the 3 and the 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz does the same with the C and the E Class. So the British company does not try any kind of experiment, it only follows trends.
The wheelbase was enlarged by 140 mm to 3100 mm and the design was reworked so that it would not harm dynamic lines of the exterior. Thanks to modifications in configuration of seats is the difference in legroom even larger than the increase of the wheelbase, the XFL offers 156 mm more space than the standard XF. Moreover the 4-zone climate control is for the first time in any Jaguar joined by air ionisation technology. Another first is Clear Exit Detection, a safety system which warns rear seat occupants against opening the doors into traffic approaching from behind.
The engine line-up is simple: 200PS or 240PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and 340PS 3.0 V6 supercharged petrol. Diesel, four-wheel drive or sports version will not be offered in China.
Despite its size and equipment the XFL will be the most affordable Jaguar in the Chinese market. All other models are imported and duty is depending on the engine size up to more than half of the final price. The XFL will be, as the first Jaguar, manufactured in China by joint venture of Jaguar Land Rover and local company Chery in Changshu. Sales of the XFL will start in the autumn, prices have not been confirmed yet.
